Why Rug Size Matters
One of the most common decorating mistakes is choosing a rug that's too small. The right rug size can define a space, anchor your furniture, and make a room feel larger and more cohesive. Here's our room-by-room guide to picking the perfect rug size.
Living Room Rug Sizes
For living rooms, the most popular sizes are 8x10 and 9x12 rugs. A good rule of thumb: all major furniture legs should sit on the rug, or at least the front legs of sofas and chairs.
- Small living rooms (under 12x15 ft): 5x8 or 6x9 rug
- Medium living rooms: 8x10 rug
- Large or open-plan spaces: 9x12 or 10x14 rug
Bedroom Rug Sizes
In the bedroom, your rug should extend at least 18–24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed.
- Twin or Full bed: 5x8 rug
- Queen bed: 8x10 rug
- King bed: 9x12 rug
Dining Room Rug Sizes
For dining rooms, choose a rug large enough so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Add 24 inches to each side of your table.
Hallway Runner Rug Sizes
Runner rugs are ideal for hallways, entryways, and staircases. Leave 4–6 inches of bare floor on each side of the runner for a balanced look.
Pro Tip: Use Painter's Tape
Before purchasing, use painter's tape to outline your desired rug size on the floor. This simple trick helps you visualize exactly how the rug will look in your space.
